A Year On The Land

Lexie Devine Photography is launching a year-long photo storytelling project in 2026 to capture the real, hands-on work of Rhode Island’s small-scale farmers, growers, and homesteaders.

This is a tribute to the everyday moments — tending soil, gathering eggs, harvesting flowers — that define life on the land.

The project will feature 12 different farms and homesteads across Kent and Washington County throughout the year, culminating in a public gallery exhibition at the end of 2026 to honor and share these stories with the wider community.

This project is deeply personal for me. As someone who’s passionate about gardening, homegrown food, and supporting local, organic goods, I’ve become more and more aware of how disconnected our modern world is from the people and processes behind the things we use and consume every day.

In a society built around convenience, it’s easy to overlook the time, care, and physical labor it takes to grow, raise, and craft the essentials of daily life — not just food, but also flowers, wool, honey, herbal products, and other goods made with skill and intention.

Through this project, I want to help shed light on what it truly takes to bring these things from farm to table, field to market, and hand to home — and to honor the people who make that possible.

I’m inspired by the strong bond between land, family, and community that so many farmers and makers carry with them. Whether it’s a multi-generational dairy farm, a backyard flower grower, a shepherd spinning fiber, or a beekeeper tending their hives, these stories deserve to be seen, shared, and celebrated.

This isn’t just a photography project — it’s a love letter to resilience, sustainability, and the quiet strength that keeps our local ecosystems and economies alive.
