A Second Birthday at Home | Rhode Island Lifestyle Family Photography

After this session I said to my husband, “I wish I had someone do this for us.”

Because when you’re in the thick of motherhood, it’s so easy to just be in it and not really stop to notice all the little things. And honestly, even being a photographer, I’m guilty of this. I forget to grab my camera and capture the tiny details that I already know my heart is going to ache for someday.

I recently spent a morning with a sweet family in their home, celebrating their daughter’s second birthday with an in-home lifestyle family session. There was no elaborate plan or perfectly curated activity list. We simply hung out and let her lead the way.

She played, we had a little tea party, read a story, and eventually headed outside for bubbles. I spent the morning documenting all of the ordinary, beautiful pieces of their life together — the kind of moments that can feel so small when you’re living them, but somehow become the biggest things to remember.

The wispy baby hairs.

The little curls.

The funny little hairstyles they somehow come up with.

Those two tiny buns sitting right on top of this little girl’s head while she looked at her mama… I mean, come on.

Sometimes I think it’s nice to have someone from the outside come in and spend a morning just noticing all of it for you. The things you see every single day but might not realize are actually the things that make this season so special.

That’s what I love about lifestyle family photography. It doesn’t have to be about creating the perfect moment. It’s about documenting your moments — the way your children actually play, the stories they love, the way they reach for you, the backyard bubbles, the messy hair, the tiny hands, and all of those little pieces of childhood that are changing before you even realize it. Of course I love the beautiful photos where everyone is smiling at the camera. Those are important too.

But these little moments? The ones where nobody is posing and nothing “big” is happening?

Those are the photographs I want to make for you.

The ones you’ll look back on years from now and suddenly remember exactly how little they were, how they smelled, how they wore their hair, how they looked at you, and what it felt like to have them this little.

Because those are the things we don’t always think to document.

But they’re the things we’ll want to remember forever.

As a Rhode Island lifestyle family photographer, I love getting to step into families’ everyday lives, whether that means a cozy morning at home in Coventry, a playful afternoon in East Greenwich, or documenting those in-between moments with a family in North Kingstown. Your home, your routines, your people — exactly as they are right now.

Because this season won’t always look like this.

And that’s exactly why it’s worth remembering.
